The Person & Work of the Holy Spirit
Part 2
- Who He is
√ He is called God in the Bible, and He possesses all of the attributes that only God can have.
He is called God - Acts 5:3-4
"But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
"While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
√ His attributes; He is omnipresent - Psalm 139:7-10
"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me."
"Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one
of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and
you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
"For the promise is to you and to your children,
and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."
Acts 2:38-39
Notice that the Holy Spirit indwells all believers, then and now. He has to be omnipresent to do that!
√ He is omnipotent - Luke 1:35
"And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God."
and in Matthew 1:20
"But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit."
The Holy Spirit is the person of the Godhead who was responsible for creating the human body that Jesus would dwell in. The power of the Holy Spirit and the Highest are equated.
√ He is omniscient - I Cor. 2:10-11
"But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
He knows all truth."
√ He is eternal - Heb. 9:14
"how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
√ He is holy - Romans 1:4
"and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead,"
His name alone tells us that He is Holy!
